چکیده

Truncation is a term, which defines cutting off the negligible contribution of the results of the fault tree/event tree analysis, when evaluating complex facilities. This paper shows that consideration of requirements from Probabilistic Risk Assessment Procedures Guide at the largest acceptable truncation may lead to more than 40% differences from the results with no truncation at results for Fussel-Vesely importance and to more than 80% at results for Risk Increase Factor. As Risk Increase Factor is very much an indicator of acceptability of changes according to Regulatory Guide 1.174, such large differences may lead to misleading conclusion about the acceptability of proposed changes. The paper shows that requirements on truncation should be more severe, e.g. considering also accuracy of results of Risk Increase Factor. In this sense, a method for setting up the truncation limit is developed. Application of the method removes the ambiguity of the PSA results due to truncation and it enables to apply PSA results for decision-making.

Probabilistic Assessment of Pseudo-Static Design of Gravity-Type Quay Walls

Failure of the quay walls due to earthquakes results in severe economic loss. Because of hazards threatening such inexpensive nodes of national and international transportation networks, seismic design of quay walls is still an evolving topic in marine structural engineering. This study investigates the sensitivity of the gravity-type quay wall stability respect to uncertain soil and seismic pr...

Preliminary Level-1 Probabilistic Risk Assessment of the IRIS Plant

We have been performing a preliminary Level-1 Internal-event Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) of the IRIS Plant in order to evaluate its core damage frequency. Initiating events, both loss-of-coolant accidents and transients, that would potentially lead to core damage have been considered and categorized into thirteen events in each group in order to cover overall potential events. Event mit...

Systematic Model-Based Safety Assessment Via Probabilistic Model Checking

Safety assessment is a well-established process for assuring the safety and reliability of critical (aeronautical) systems. It uses probabilistic (quantitative) analysis to provide precise measures about the safety requirements of a system. Traditionally, quantitative safety assessment uses fault-tree analysis, but certification authorities also allow the use of Markov models. In this paper we ...

Applicability of Monte Carlo Method with Different Sampling Techniques for Seismic Safety Evaluation of Nuclear Power Plants

Fault-tree and Event-tree analysis is widely utilized in safety engineering and is almost exclusively relied upon in Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) for nuclear power plants (NPPs). In this approach, Binary Decision Diagram (BDD), which can obtain exact solutions in theory, was introduced as an alternative for a traditional approximation method, namely Minimal Cut Set (MCS) method. Howeve...

Tackling Truncation Errors in CSL Model Checking through Bounding Semantics

Model checking aims to give exact answers to queries about a model’s execution but, in probabilistic model checking, ensuring exact answers might be difficult. Numerical iterative methods are heavily used in probabilistic model checking and errors caused by truncation may affect correctness. To tackle truncation errors, we investigate the bounding semantics of continuous stochastic logic for Ma...
